So, what the Hell is This I hear thee cry! I figured because I can I'd throw down some Picks of the last month, things that I've gone and seen or played or watched that I've liked/disliked and then review it all in monthly bitesize package!
So, here we go... AUGUST 2008!!
What happened?? FILMS, that's what happened! I saw more Movies in the Cinema in August than I have so far in any other month THIS YEAR, and there was only ONE I was disappointed with...
We'll start with The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Many mixed reviews about this film, some love, some hate. Personally I thought it was very cool considering Rachel Weisz and Oded Fehr (Or Arnold Vosloo of course!) weren't in it. As a HUGE Lover of Japanese and Chinese culture the film Struck a Chord (An Am7 for those interested)
Next up Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Three Words... Ron.. 'I-Survived-an-Alien-Film'.. Perlman.. The man is incredible and once again plays the part of Hellboy Awesomely... Maybe a little too much of the 'Oh Crap'in' but other than that he, and the rest of the cast (Particularly Doug Jones who played Three awesome roles as Abe Sapien, The Chamberlain and The Angel of Death!). Definitely a film too watch although it can be a little too... Out there during the One Part.
Last up from the films is... Well... Star Wars: The Clone Wars... Now I am a Fan of Star Wars... I have the Limited Edition DVDs, all the games, a Lightsaber and a Full Skywalker Jedi Outfit (Shows my Geek there!) and so the expectations were High... I thought they CAN'T make it any worse than Episode I... Well, if you take the GREAT things about Episode I (Qui-Gon and the Darth Maul fight) and make a Jar Jar (I don't care what people say, he is the SINGLE WORST Character in any film of All Time!) like character a main character you have Clone Wars... It is utterly terrible... People were walking out, THAT’S how bad it was. I stuck with it because it's STAR WARS... The ONLY saving graces was Chris Lee and the Lightsaber fights and even those couldn’t save it... I never thought I would EVER say that Chris Lee couldn’t save a film but there you go.
Now technically I do not think I saw this in August although it was close I think! Batman: The Dark Knight.. what can be said about this film other than quite possibly the greatest Comic book Film ever, and this is coming from a guy who walked out of Ironman with a GIANT grin on his face. The Dark Knight FOR TEH WIN! Still think they could have done a LOT more with the Harvey Dent and Dammit Christian Bale still annoys me but Gods Damn it was still incredible. I know a lot of people have gone on about this, and I will just touch on the Subject but, Heath is the Fucking Man. He is PERFECT. Utterly Incredible.
Now onto games! I've been a little out the loop with the gaming world for a while and gone a little Retro, Dene bless him bought UFO: Aftershock to find it Hates Vista so I ended up with it, if you like the X-com/UFO series then go get it, even better there’s a Triple Pack with Aftershock, Afterlight and the other one I can't remember the title of!
Also Audiosurf, its been about for a while but I finally go around to trying the Demo and immediately bought the full game (for $9.99 its a freakin' Bargain), for those who don’t know what it is go and get Steam and play the Demo... its AWESOME, its a Music Rhythm game (yes, like Guitar Hero *sigh*) but its COOL not crap (like Guitar Hero!), you put in your own music and the Tracks that you Ride upon are based on the Music you put in (So naturally I tried it with the Head stuff, MAN its awesome!)
Oh and the new (and apparently last) Sims 2 Expansion Pack came out. Pretty cool if you like the Sims but some big bugs (like Apartments near the Ocean/Sea are screwed!)
Finally gigs... Only one gig went to this month and I had little choice in it cause we were playing! The Stein Bar in Walsall, Spectre was absolutely Incredible, when saw there Acoustic Set I was blown away by the talent and how damned tight they were with Acoustic Stuff, but there Electric Set... My Freakin' God... Just Awesome! Alas we had some Doom in the form of the Power going off, Just our Luck really.
So, my Picks of August have to be Batman and Hellboy film-wise and Audiosurf gamewise. Gigs have to be Spectre!! An honorable mention for UFO: Aftershock and The Mummy And avoid like the Plague for Star Wars: The Clone Wars, oh and the Stein Bar (Bastards!)
